  9. BIZ-045  GLASS ETCHING BUSINESS
  10.  
  11. This art medium, centuries old, can be incorporated and expanded upon
  12. to create a business opportunity for the artistically inclined.
  13. Glass etching has been around for a long time, in one form or
  14. another.  From grinding areas of glass to make them cloudy, to
  15. sandblasting areas with fine silica sand, to chemically etching glass
  16. to create artistic patterns.  All these methods have been used
  17. commercially through the years.
  18.  
  19. This PC business makes use of chemical etchant to create beautifully
  20. etched mirrors, vases, glasses and other glass products which can
  21. be retailed at flea markets and other outlets catering to hand
  22. crafted products.  The products could also be wholesaled to fancy
  23. gift shops that specialize in one-of-a-kind, objets d'art.  As
  24. with most artistic objects, the selling price of etched glass is
  25. usually many times the original cost of the plain glass object.
  26. Suddenly, 50c glasses from the local K-Mart are turned into
  27. elegant, one-of-a-kind dinner glasses selling for up to $5.00 or
  28. more each.

  30. This particular glass etching business is made possible only with
  31. the advent of the personal computer.  In order to chemically etch
  32. glass in an artistic pattern (or lettering, monograms, etc.) you
  33. must first produce an etching mask.  This mask prevents the etchant
  34. from touching, or clouding, the areas of glass you want to keep clear.
  35. Many materials have been used for masking -- paint, varnish, masking
  36. tape, tar, etc.  Anything that will keep the etchant away from the
  37. glass--while still allowing a pattern to be cut or scratched into the
  38. mask to allow the etchant to do it's job on the glass. It was discovered,
  39. by accident, that laser printer toner also makes an excellent masking
  40. material.

  42. The process works like this
  43.  
  44.      1. You create an artistic design, picture, pattern, monogram,
  45.         etc., using one of the many good PC painting or drawing programs.
  46.  
  47.      2. You print the output in reverse (most programs can flip the
  48.         drawing as an option) with your laser printer on special paper
  49.         called, "release paper".
  50.  
  51.      3. Tape the laser printed "mask" onto the glass object and
  52.         heat it in an oven or with a heat gun to re-melt the toner.
  53.         With the toner hot, rubbing the back of the release paper
  54.         will transfer the toner to the glass.
  55.   
  56.      4. With the glass object masked off where it is not to be
  57.         etched, the paste etchant is applied to the glass.  After
  58.         2-4 minutes, the etchant paste is washed off the glass
  59.         object and finally the toner mask is removed leaving the
  60.         etched object ready for sale.

  62. There are several books on glass etching available in most
  63. libraries, but the best explaination of using laser toner as a
  64. glass etching mask was written up in a magazine called, "Flash-
  65. The Premier Journal of Desktop Printing", in the October/November
  66. 1993 issue. (Vol. 5, No. 3)  Published by Blacklightning Publishing,
  67. Inc., Riddle Pond Rd., West Topsham, VT., 05086.  Contact them for

  71. The following sources of special supplies for glass etching are
  72. provided for your convenience, but should be considered only a
  73. starting point.  Contact them directly for availability, latest
  74. pricing, etc.  For other sources of supplies and information,
  75. request sample copies or subscribe to periodicals such as "Flash
  76. Magazine" or "New Media Magazine", published by Hypermedia
  77. Communications, Inc., 901 Mariner Island Blvd., Ste. 365, San
  78. Mateo, CA., 94404.

  80. The computer requirements for this type of business are a little
  81. more critical because you will be working with graphics programs.
  82. A 386-33MHZ computer should be considered minimum, with at
  83. least 4 Megabytes of RAM. A 486-66 with 8 Megabytes of Ram would be
  84. a more realistic choice.

  86. A hard disk, however, is a must to insure the most efficient
  87. computer operation and the shortest waiting times when
  88. working with databases, spreadsheets, and other memory intensive
  89. type computer applications.  For this business, the use of memory
  90. intensive graphics programs, necessitates the largest hard drive
  91. disk you can afford.  There is an old saying that you can
  92. never have enough hard disk memory space.  Start with a minimum of
  93. 400 Megabytes of memory and if you will be running "Windows"
  94. programs, think about an even larger hard disk.

  96. A good laser printer is essential to the operation of this business
  97. and with the price of the latest 600 dpi laser printers dropping below
  98. $1,000, we would recommend one of these.  A laser printer, along with
  99. DTP software, can be used to produce your own laser printed advertising
  100. flyers, brochures, catalogs, etc.  It will even give your corrospondence
  101. that professional, "Print Shop look".

  103. Other office equipment you may want to consider might include a
  104. FAX machine to be able to send and receive reports, etc. without
  105. having to wait for the postal service or even over night priority
  106. mail. An alternative, to a stand-alone Fax machine, might be a flatbed
  107. scanner along with PC Fax software, such as "WinFax Pro" from
  108. Delrina, to enable you to send a Fax right from your desk.

  110. A telephone answering machine which can sense the difference
  111. between FAX transmissions and voice  may also come in quite handy
  112. in the home office.

  114. Software recommendations for a business like this are abundant.
  115. From high power commercial drawing programs such as "CorelDraw",
  116. or "Adobe Illustrator", to shareware programs such as "Desktop Paint",
  117. "Fingerpaint", "Neopaint", "Painters Apprentice", and many more.
  118. These and more are listed in most shareware catalogs, including
  119. the one available from Matco Electronic Publications.

  121. Basic and general software requirements for a business of this type
  122. would consist of the usual word processing, database, accounting and
  123. personal and business income tax preparation software.  As with most
  124. of the business ideas presented in this book, we feel that properly
  125. selected SHAREWARE (try-before-you-buy type software) will prove
  126. to be more than adequate for all your basic business software
  127. needs.

  129. For word processing software, if you can afford the $250 pricetag,
  130. the best available is Wordperfect 6.1 for Windows (at least in my
  131. opinion). As an excellent, and less expensive, alternative I would
  132. recommend either of two shareware programs. "Super WP", is an
  133. excellent WordPerfect clone that has many features superior to the
  134. commercial program or "PC-Write", one of the best wordprocessors at any
  135. price. Although neither of these has been written for Windows, they are
  136. both very good wordprocessing programs with many features.
  137.  
  138. A database program is usually needed to keep track of customers,
  139. client data, mailing lists and many other forms of data, etc.  The
  140. shareware program, "PC-File", is an excellent shareware database
  141. program that has features such as custom report writing, letter
  142. writing with mail merge, data analysis, plus charts and graph
  143. support.  "PC-File" also features dBase III and Clipper
  144. compatibility, should you ever wish to write a custom application
  145. for your business.

  147. Every small business needs bookkeeping software to keep track of
  148. income and expenses.  What they don't need is a full blown
  149. accounting package that takes more time than the business itself.
  150. The shareware program, "Medlin Accounting", is an easy to use,
  151. time saving IRS approved single entry bookkeeping system which is
  152. more than adequate for the small to medium sized business.  It
  153. features a general ledger module, an accounts receivable module,
  154. an accounts payable module as well as an inventory module.
  155.  
  156. Another financial program we would recommend to any small
  157. businessman, or individual for that matter, is the shareware
  158. program, "Checkmate Plus".  "Checkmate Plus" is an easy to use,
  159. yet powerful, checkbook style, double entry accounting system
  160. which will also print checks on either laser or dot matrix
  161. printers.

  163. Spreadsheet programs are sometimes required by the small business
  164. and we would concede that the industry leader is the commercial
  165. program, "Lotus 1-2-3".  However, an excellent clone to Lotus 1-2-3
  166. is the shareware program, "As Easy As".  Menu driven for easy use
  167. yet a very powerful spreadsheet program.  Features 8192 rows by
  168. 256 columns, dBase III import/export, macro playback, dot matrix
  169. and laser printer support, worksheet linking, charting and much,
  170. much more.

  172. Communications software, for use with telephone line and computer
  173. modem, is often needed by the small business owner.  By using
  174. communications software, the home based entrepreneur is able to
  175. access remote computers, informational databases, bulletin board
  176. services (BBS's), client computers, etc., right from his/her home
  177. office over the phone lines.  This makes many high tech businesses
  178. able to be run successfully from any place a phone can be
  179. accessed.

  181. The full featured shareware communications program we would
  182. recommend is "Procomm Plus".  This time proven shareware program
  183. is perfect for most communications needs, and features 100 number
  184. dialing directory, script file capability and support for most
  185. major file transfer protocols including XMODEM, TELINK, and
  186. COMPUSERVE B.
